***Down and Out focuses on relationship and personal struggle for Dive, more than the MC side of things, you'll find out why in the first few chapters***

Stricken by grief, Kalen “Dive” Brooks drifts away from his MC brethren, only having room in his life for his child. Worried for his son, he’ll do anything necessary to protect him, even if it’s admitting he needs help.

Alone and vulnerable, Philomena “Mena” McAdams has lost it all: her parents, her husband, her job and her home. Living out of her car, she’s learned life isn’t worth regrets. When Mena takes the job of nanny and housekeeper for Dive, she doesn’t know what she’s getting into, but neither does Dive.

Can they learn to love again when things are so down and out?

what i think

Wow-this book starts with a tear-jerking prologue! Holy Moly! Down and Out kicks you in the heart right away. You meet ‘Dive’ right after one of the most heartbreaking events of anyone’s life. Months later, you meet Mena, and her story is pretty damn sad too! Mena takes the job as a nanny for Dive’s son, Koda. She is a natural, and Koda loves her as much as she loves him. But, Dive is a bit…growly.

Dive and Mena have a seriously slow burn relationship. I mean, SLOW. While I like slow burn, there were parts of this book that were maybe too slow. I understand why Dive was reticent. Its totally understandable; however, it made the book feel stagnant. However, I still enjoyed the story. There isn’t much MC drama, so if you have read the other books in the series, you won’t find the same level of danger/drama, but there is a lot of emotion and deep feelings. Its a different side of the club. You don’t have to have read there other books first, but there are lots of characters from previous books and a bit of the drama from a previous book that make another appearance right at the end!

  • POV: Dual
  • Tears: yes, a few
  • Trope: single parent
  • Triggers: none
  • Series/Standalone: series; you don’t have to read the others first, but you probably should!
  • Cliffhanger: There are a few plot things about the MC left open to be solved in the next book

I was born in Brisbane Australia, my step-dad was in the army which caused us to move around a lot. We finally settled in country Victoria, Australia. I am the youngest of four children and I can say that I was spoilt a bit. I drove my mum crazy when I refused to eat meat at a young age.

Now I live with my husband and two children, and I find myself regretting all the troubles I put my parents through because my monsters are just as picky as I was.

I started writing in 2013 and self-published the first of the Hawks MC Club series Holding Out. The next to follow was something different, I wrote Senseless Attraction, a YA novel. Soon, I was back to the Hawks series with number two Climbing Out. I have more to write in the series, but there will be also be more novels in the humorous erotica genre, like Left to Chance.

  1. I like how you described the hero as growly!
Having the romance be too slow is probably not the greatest. I’m glad you still liked it overall though.
    Great review! 🙂
