For four years, Grace Sullivan wrote to a Marine she never met, and fell in love. But when his deployment ended, so did the letters. Ever since that day, Grace has been coasting, academically and emotionally. The one thing she's decided? No way is Noah Jackson - or any man - ever going to break her heart again.
Noah has always known exactly what he wants out of life. Success. Stability. Control. That's why he joined the Marines, and that's why he's fighting his way - literally - through college. Now that he's got the rest of his life on track, he has one last conquest: Grace Sullivan. But since he was the one who stopped writing, he knows that winning her back will be his biggest battle yet.

Undeclared is book 1 in the Woodlands series. It is a New Adult romance that centers around college students. Grace spent all 4 years of high school writing to a Marine stationed in the middle east. They develop a very deep friendship and Grace feels that there is a true connection. In her final letter she attempts to put herself out there by telling Noah she wants to meet him. He replies and puts her in the friend zone. No further letters are sent and 2 years pass.

Grace is in college and she has no idea what she plans to study. She is very cautious about everything. She never wants to do anything that might cause her any pain. So, she has never dated, hasn’t taken the chance of applying for the fine arts program, and hasn’t been able to stop thinking about Noah. Her cousin/roommate Lana is a great force in Grace’s life. Lana is always pushing Grace in a good way. Then, one day, Noah arrives. Grace is totally thrown. She can’t figure out why he is at HER college, 2 years after he friend zoned her. Noah obviously never meant to push Grace away but he felt he had to get his life together before meeting her.

Their budding relationship is filled with my least favorite trope: miscommunication or lack of communication. How could 2 people who spent 4 years doing nothing but communicating suddenly not be able to communicate? However, its very appropriate for their age. Grace is still immature and Noah is still dealing with some PTSD. So, even though I wanted to shake both of them and tell them to talk about their feelings, I understood why they weren’t. Overall, the story of Grace and Noah was captivating enough to keep me reading past my irritation at the character’s action.

I did listen to this on audio. The narrators were GREAT! Noah had a perfect accent for his Texas roots and Grace’s accent was so midwest I actually thought about several of my friends voices while listening! Undeclared is a great book for an audio because its descriptive enough to give you images while you listen, yet not so bogged down in details as to leave you confused.

    • I read one book in the Hit Man series…not my favorite. Read her football series! SO GOOD!!!! Jockblocked is my favorite and one of my favorite books of 2016!

  1. It’s been ages since I read this book but I did enjoy it. There are other fabulous books in this series and I’m looking forward to Adam’s book. Great review, Samantha! I should try listening to it, that would be awesome to hear the accents!

  2. Even though I can struggle with characters not communicating it really depends on the characters and how mature they are. But it sounds like it worked well for this one considering the personalities of the main characters here. Glad it was a good one though.

  3. So happy to see you enjoyed this one! I’ve had Undeclared on my Kindle for ages and just recently downloaded Unspoken. I’m a little wary of the miscommunication/lack of communication issue since, like you, it is my least favorite trope ever. But it sounds like maybe it’s appropriate given the circumstances. Great review!
