Non-Bookish News:

You know the saying about sailors getting their ‘sea legs’? Yeah, teachers have our own version. It involves getting used to standing on your feet for 8 hours, holding your bladder, strengthening your voice to talk over people all day, and eating in 10 minutes while standing up, making copies, or grading papers. So, this past week I had to teach 2 sessions of a test prep class. I am easing back into my ‘teaching legs’. Getting up early, talking all day, etc. But, I am lucky-the kids I had this week were delightful! I mean, no kid wants to spend one of their last weeks of summer in a test prep class, but they were such troopers! I was also able to get a jump start on some of my normal job stuff-getting caseload lists together, making an IEP due date calendar, getting test scores from June, and checking schedules. So, easing back into work has been good. Next week I have 2 different groups of kids for the test prep class. Hopefully they are just as lovely and continue to make my transition easy!

I had to go to the doctor this week to have my ear check out. If you aren’t aware, I have a damaged ear drum that has left me 80% deaf in my left ear. Well, I have been battling what I assumed were allergies for a while. This week though I couldn’t hear at all. Even with my hearing aid in, I was unable to hear a single thing. Off to the doctor I went and she gave me an double strength antibiotic for a sinus infection and a steroid to help reduce all the inflammation. Hopefully this will help. Not being able to hear is crappy, but then losing what little bit you have left is really shitty!

This week I began to notice several of the PR companies I have worked with in the past are closing up shop or seriously taking on less. Now, most of the time, I don’t go through PR companies. I get the books from the publishers directly. However, for some of my favorite indie pub authors, PR companies are the only way (too expensive to put on net galley). Has anyone else noticed this? I have been blogging for over 2 years now, and I hate to see some of my favorite PR companies going away. I am sure this is a normal part of the book world, but I hate change. Not knowing where some of the authors end up means I miss out on a lot of information. It easy to lose track of an author and forget about them. It makes it difficult to keep up with those awesome indie authors.

So, whats new with you this week? Did you read any of the same books I did? Did you find any great book deals I need to grab ASAP? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Glad the kids were troopers in their test prep class. I love planning. I think I enjoy planning for things almost as much as I enjoy doing them πŸ™‚ so I hope you enjoyed getting ready Sorry to hear about your infection. Hope you feel better soon!

  2. Good luck with all things school related, Sam! You can do it!! I didn’t know you had a partial deafness in one of your ear. I hope you’re feeling better now. I’m super sad about Tasty Book Tours closing down. They are the only tour company I work with lately mostly because I like how no-nonsense/non-preferential they are. I’ll miss seeing those emails. Who else closed down? :/
Your haul is so jealous-inducing! I can’t wait to read Royally Endowed and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it!
    Take care! πŸ™‚

    • Yes, Tasty closing down has made me epically sad!! I think something is up at TRSOR. They haven’t had any tours in awhile. And Rock Star PR seems to be moving to ARC teams instead of tours for individual books.
I have been partially deaf for over 5 years. Getting hearing aids when you are 32 years old is depressing as hell, but I am pretty much okay with it now. Most of the time anyway!

  3. Good luck with all of your school related things! I just went to an open house for my daughter preschool and it left me feeling overwhelmed. haha! I’m okay now that it’s been a few days tho. We’ll just have to see how it goes, I guess. I know my daughter is going to love it, so that makes me happy.

I noticed a few PR companies announcing their “closings” too, and was pretty bummed. I’m not a good person with change! lol.

I hope you love your new books and have a great week!

    • I got my hearing aid about 5-6 years ago. I just couldn’t keep teaching without it. I couldn’t clearly understand what people were saying! So it was a difficult decision but ultimately it had to happen.

  4. Boy do I know what you mean about teacher legs! I have a few weeks before the kids come yet, but we go back the 16th. It’s nice you’re able to ease back into things with the test prep groups – and even better that the kids were a good group. I hope this week’s group is just as nice or better!

Sorry about your ear, that must have been super frustrating while you’re trying to teach! Hope the medicine restores the hearing you have left πŸ™‚ Have a great week and happy reading!

    • Yes, hearing issues and teaching do not go well together!! Teenagers mumble everything! Ugh! It is nice to ease back into it. Otherwise its miserable! My throat hurts, my feet hurt, my head hurts. So, easing back into the routine in small bits helps a lot!

  5. I hope the antibiotics help and you are feeling better soon. It at least sounds like your teaching has gotten off to a good start for the new school year. It’s sad that so many PR companies are down-scaling or closing. I’m sorry to hear that. It’s such a competitive field. I hope you have a great week, Samantha!

  6. I taught high school for 12 years, so I understand how difficult the first days back (from any break) are. Good luck and I hope your ear heals quickly. I am pretty excited to see such a high rating for VanDyken’s book. I have liked most of her books.

  7. Good luck with your ear, hope it works out! I have hearing loss too on my right ear, due to an inner ear thing- I’m right handed but have to talk on the phone with my left ear or I can’t hear the conversation. Sounds like it’s not as bad as yours though, hoping the drugs help. πŸ™‚ And yay for a smooth transition so far! I always think it must be as hard or more for the teachers as the kids, when it’s time to go back. πŸ™‚

  8. I did notice the PR companies doing less or closing. I have a few indie authors I work for who are doing their own tours like publishers or signing on with new ones. Hope the sinus infection clears up soon.

    • Yes, I have seen some indie authors making their own blogger connections. Hopefully I can keep track over where all my favorites end up (I know Cecy is with you-I have done her tours before when she was using Tasty as well).

  9. Hope you feel better soon! Sinus infections are the worst.

Sorry about Tasty, but I also like Goddess Fish Promotions. They reward the bloggers, which is nice and they are really easy to work with.

Hope you have a great week!

  10. Glad the transition back into the school year is going well. I’m sure it helped that the kids in the prep class were so good!
Ugh, the infections sounds terrible – particularly if it’s having an effect on your hearing. I hope the combination of antibiotics and steroids helps to clear it up quickly.
And I hope this week’s prep classes go just as well!

  11. I hope your health gets better soon, especially during the warm season! It sucks to be sick. I’m visiting late for the Sunday post, so I hope the antibiotics will have kicked in since the time you posted! I’m having my short vacation (finally) so I’m a little slow on blog hops.
I’ve actually only ever done NetGalley, so I can’t say I’ve noticed too much of a difference?
My boyfriend also teaches. In fact, I’m vacationing in this summer camp for kids he’s teaching in! So it’s pretty fun.
BTW, have I told you how awesome I think your blog font is? Totally super cool. Especially love typing the comment in this font, haha!
Have a great reading week πŸ™‚ and thanks for sharing some great links!

    • I am so glad you like the font!! I have been thinking about changing it because I was afraid it was too difficult to read! But, I love it too!
Have fun at the summer camp!

  12. What a great week you have had, and I so don’t envy you being a teacher. Teachers have one of the hardest jobs ever. I have had roommates in the past that were teachers and I observed how much work they put into it at home. I admire you for that.

Some greats book you have read this past week. And some amazing books…I can’t wait to read Emma Chases book.
