Non-Bookish News:

I mentioned last weekend that I was going with my seniors to a Mosque this week. We had a very informative visit! The speaker was a lovely woman from Pakistan who engaged the kids in a chat about the Muslim faith but also the misconceptions. She spoke to them about women’s rights, jihad, and answered all their questions with candor. It was such a great trip.

I finally got my wish for the weather to get colder. This week it actually got down to freezing a couple of nights! I love cold weather and snow so winter is my absolute favorite. Last year we had hardly any snow and I hope this year is different. Partially because I love snow, but really? I’m a teacher and I live for snow days. Its like God’s gift to those of us who dare to teach.

Speaking of teaching, I had to work on both Saturday and Sunday (I’m probably at work while you are reading this so I promise to visit later!). Saturday we had the ACT and I am the test coordinator for our school. Then Sunday was open house. Since we are a Catholic school we have recruiting activities like open house. Potential students and their parents come and check out the school, see the clubs and sports we offer, and ask questions of teachers and current students. Its very important but its so exhausting. 2 hours of smiling non stop, answering the same question for dozens of different people, and then knowing you have to come back to work in 12 hours. October is a busy month for me and I am ready for a break!

I have been on such an audiobook binge! My commute to work is about 40 min so I can get about 80 min of listening time a day. Plus, on the weekends I listen while I clean. I am starting to develop a list of my favorite narrators so I can listen to more books by those awesome people. Also, right now, audible has a deal going on for the 1 year plan for $99. Even though I was already a member, I was able to email them and ask about it, and they gave me the deal. So, I now have 12 credits burning a hole in my account!! I’m trying to hold onto them….we will see how long that lasts!

So, whats new with you this week? Did you read any of the same books I did? Did you find any great book deals I need to grab ASAP? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I’m so glad to hear the mosque visit went well and was informative! I hope the kids learned and it cleared up some misconceptions for them.
Your week sounds like it was so busy. Hopefully, you’re able to relax for a while after all this is over! I’m glad you’re getting into audiobooks too. I used to be really into them when I had a long commute, but I don’t have that anymore. :/
I hope you enjoy your new books! Happy reading and take care! 🙂

    • Yes the Mosque was perfect and by the end, the students felt comfortable asking questions because the lady showing us around was so easy to talk to. Overall, a great experience and one that I am so glad to have had!

  2. Snow days.. Hah. Over here we have snow for about 4-5 months and no snow days. I mean, everyone still goes to work and school. Unless it drops below -25C, then they can take a day off. So I don’t really like the snow 😀 we’ve already had snow last week, BTW!
Also, listening to audiobooks while cleaning is totally the best thing ever 🙂

    • Ugh snow without snow days?!?! Thats terrible. Although, we have to have at least 4-5in before they will give us a snow day. When I lived in the southern US if they even thought there was a CHANCE of snow, everything closed down! It was crazy!

  3. I am happy to hear the kids learned a lot on the field trip. Those types of open dialogs are more important than ever with all the poison that goes around on social media and in the “news”. I love audiobooks. I listen to them while I work (lucky, right?), and my library allows me access to Hoopla, which has a great selection.

    • It was really neat for the students to be able to ask questions on their mind in a safe, caring environment without the toxicity of social media, news outlets, etc. Oh I would LOVE to be able to listen at work! I’m so jealous! And Hoopla is a Godsend! I have been getting most of my audiobooks from there if they aren’t ARCs (being able to get audiobooks for review? AMAZING!)

  4. The visit to the Mosque sounds like a great field trip! Sounds like a great way to promote acceptance and understanding of others who are different, have different beliefs, etc. But ugh, no, I hate cold weather! Glad you’re enjoying it though 🙂 Snow days do sound great! All I ever had growing up were hurricane days, and those were only fun if the hurricane didn’t actually end up hitting or causing damage lol.

  5. Your field trip does sound like a huge success! That’s awesome that the students were able to learn so much. Like you, I’ve been wishing for colder weather (not snow though – I can live without that for now), and luckily things cooled down where I live; however, not below freezing. The new Harper Solan book looks great – I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts on it. Have a great week! 🙂

    • I love cold weather. My husband might disagree with my saying that though since I am always saying “I’m cold! Why is it so cold in here” but I love it.

  6. I’ve been on an audio kick too. I don’t have long drives, but I can get so much done at home like cleaning and computer work and still be able to have a book going. With reading that’s not an option. It’s also worked great for my migraines. They make it so I can’t read, but listening works and I get my book love in. Hope this weekends open house went well. SNOW, SNOW, SNOW… I miss snow. Now that we living in sunny CA, I don’t get my snow fix. I’m not much for the cold, but I just love watching snow come down and having a nice fire going while curled up with a good book and something hot. I grew up in Indiana and we had snow. I love all your pretty new additions. I hope you enjoy them. Their were some great book deals this last week. I was good and din’t buy anything. ^_^ Have a great week ahead and happy reading!

    • I lived in the southern US for a while and I always missed the snow. I love it so much!
You are much stronger than me for not buying anything. I do not have that kind of willpower. Also why I need to lose like 50 lbs!

  7. the Mosque trips sounds like it went well. We had a cold spell but will be back to 80s this week. I’ll take that. LOL I thought I missed a few of your posts, but looks like a missed plenty. Where does time go??? Great new reads too. I don’t know where you find the time for reading:) Hopefully you’ll get some less active days to dive in.

    • I don’t have any kids, so when I get home I have like 3 hours before my husband comes home from work. I get a LOT of reading done. Plus, he works on Saturdays so I just read all day. We don’t have cable or even local channels so reading is it for me!

  8. My mom was a teacher and would totally agree with the sentiment that Snow Day’s are God’s gift to those who teach 🙂 Sounds like you’ve had an awfully crazy month with school – hopefully you have a few upcoming breaks around the holidays to relax! (Your field trips still sound really cool though) Happy reading Samantha and hope you have a great week ahead of you! 🙂

  9. That’s a really good audible deal! I love audiobooks too, and about half my reading is now via them. Don’t know I ever lived without them. I love the idea of your class visiting a mosque, sounds really interesting and a really good way of spreading diversity awareness.

  10. It looks like you had some great books you read. I adored Ride Wild and I am super excited to pick up Gena Showalter’s book soon.

It is so neat that you got to do a visit to a mosque, I bet that was really informative. It was a cold weekend, and I loved it. It felt really nice.

  11. Sounds like the trip to the mosque was a big success. And a great learning experience.
So envious of your colder weather! It dropped into the 60’s for two days here but it’s already warming up again. Should be 80 by the weekend. *sigh*
Oh my gosh, I can’t believe you had to work all weekend. How exhausting! You need a break.
OMG, 12 Audible credits. You’re rich! LOL I just used 3 at one time and felt positively decadent. Haha.
Hope this week goes easy on you, Samantha!
