Sunday Post

Welcome to this week’s Sunday Post. This feature is brought to you by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer, so swing by after you are done here and get the full list of participants!

What I Reviewed:

Wow, its September already! Here is everything I read in August!

Best reads of the month: Black and Green, Rebel, So I married a Sorcerer! All were amazing!!!

Least favorite read of the month: Ignite…it didn’t ignite anything except my irritation with the characters.

Most anticipated September read: Archangel’s Viper!!!!

What’s Coming Up:

  •   Second Chances anthology
  •   Going Dark by Monica McCarty
  •   Guarding the Broken by Kirsty Mosley
  •   Drumline by Stacey Kestwick

This Week’s New Releases:

What I Found Online:

  •   Renee at Addicted to Romance gives us the books she would save in a natural disaster
  •   I had a discussion post on my thoughts of Kindle Unlimited! Do you use it? Have you noticed some of the issues I have?

Poll: Help me gather blogging data!

So, I would like to NOT request as many ARCs and focus on reading the books I have. But, that made me wonder, would people even read blog reviews about books that have been out forever? So, fellow bloggers, help me out and let me know what you have found to be true on your blog! Feel free to add more info in the comments!

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

This Week’s Book Haul:

ARCs thanks to the authors and publishers!

Purchased!

My Page Habit box arrived! This book box is such fun!!

Non-Bookish News:

My ear has really been bothering me this week, so I broke down and went to the ENT. I always feel like they don’t understand how much it is affecting my hearing. I liked this new doctor, but I felt that none of the doctors quite seem to hear me when I say my hearing is like 5% now. I can’t clearly hear/understand words in my left ear any more. Hopefully the ear drops will help me recover at least some of the hearing (I wasn’t working with much to begin with!!). I saw my audiologist on Friday afternoon to get some adjustments to my hearing aids and try to stop the crazy feedback I was getting. We kind of have a plan, but it involves me adjusting to some new domes in my ear canal and we aren’t sure how that will go. I have tiny baby ear canals so we have always had trouble getting hearing aids and domes that fit in my ear canal.

So, the new doc saw me on Saturday (because she is on vacation next week) and sucked a bunch of gunk out (kind hurt, not gonna lie!). She was going to put in a drying powder, but the infection hasn’t really cleared up enough. So, in addition to the drops, she went ahead and gave me a high dose oral antibiotic. She wants me to call on Monday to see how things are going so we try to do the powder if possible. Seriously, a doctor who not only came in on Saturday to see patients (she saw like 5 people this morning) but wants me to call on her vacation so she can come in again? I hope this is going to be a wonderful new doctor for me, because so far, I am really impressed.

The weather here has been nice throughout the week then Friday we got the rain. Seeing the pictures of Houston and the coast of Texas is heartbreaking though. It never seems to matter how prepared people are, storms are so unpredictable. I can’t imagine having to clean up after a storm like that. I had some sewer water in my basement and bemoaned the clean up process. It wasn’t even an inch of water! I cannot fathom having to clean up a house after FEET of dirty water. So, if any of you are in the affected area, my prayers go out to you! I can’t even imagine how overwhelming it must feel.

That was pretty much my week-work and ear drama. I hope you all are having awesome weeks! I want to read all the great things happening in your world!

So, whats new with you this week? Did you read any of the same books I did? Did you find any great book deals I need to grab ASAP? Let me know in the comments!

  1. So sorry to hear about the pain and hearing loss that you’ve been having in your ear! That sounds awful! I hope this new doctor works out much better for you. She already sounds like an improvement from your last couple doctors. It’s so frustrating when you explain what your problem is but it doesn’t seem like they take you seriously. I’ve had issues with that when I was seeing doctors for my migraines.

I hope you have a great week, and happy reading!

    • I have had so many doctors kind of brush off my frustrations with my hearing loss and say “well thats to be expected”. Um, no. You’re a doctor, you are suppose to heal things!! Hopefully this doc is different!

  2. oh we are thinking the same in wanting to read more than just ARC’s. I love older books, it’s so different from how romance is written now. Sometimes I get less hits, on those reviews especially in comparison with more popular new releases or ARC’s. But you know, I still get decent hits. Many of my followers enjoy it when I review books published not so recently. Even older than just five years or more. So I think I would love to see you review older books. Because I do think readers do like seeing that too, it may not be as popular, but I bet you will get a good response from it. Especially since its not common, so it adds something different and unique too. So I will have your back on that one.

I am so sorry to hear about your hearing loss, that is just awful. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

It is pretty devastating what is happening is south Texas. I live in Dallas, and just seeing what they are going through is breaking my heart. I mean in some neighborhoods, homes are completely filled with water. But you know its also Texas, so I think they will bounce back very quickly. I just love the way they have come together in this crisis.

    • Thank you so much for the thoughts and prayers. They are so greatly appreciated.
Yes, I really want to read some of the older books that have been pushed aside in my recent ‘must have all the ARCs’ phase. Good to know you still get decent hits on the older reviews. Good point-everyone has the new releases, so it might be cool to have some of the older, lesser remembered books! You’re so smart!
Isn’t Texas just amazing like that?! They are so resilient as people that I am amazing! For such a HUGE state, they really do come together and help one another for the good of Texas. Amazing!

  3. Jeez, I hope the new doctor is more help to you. The devastation in Texas is just awful, and it breaks my heart. Growing up in Florida we lived through several hurricanes and only once did we have to deal with flooding and it was only a few inches of water in our house. These Texans have lost everything, i just can’t imagine. My heart goes out to them.

Enjoy the new book and happy reading.

Thanks for stopping by Jenea’s Book Obsession’s Sunday Post

  4. Happy September! It looks like you had a good August in reading. I have found that new releases tend to get more hits than the older books I read, and yet the feedback I get when I ask is that people want to see the older books. So, the stats show one thing and word of mouth says another. . . I’ve read more older books this year than I have in awhile and it’s felt really good. I’m still reading mostly new books though.

I hope you are able to get some relief for your ears. Know that I am thinking of you, Samantha. I hope the new doctor works out well. It does sound like she’s going above and beyond.

The news coming out of South Texas is just awful. Those flood waters can rise so quickly. You are right, no amount of preparation can really prepare you for that.

I hope you have a great week!

    • Yes, it seems that most people are looking for the ARC reviews while the book is ‘hot’ and on their radar. But, there are SO MANY books out that I missed when they released. I just can’t seem to make up my mind!
I am loving this doc so far and very hopeful that she will help me find some solutions.

  5. I am soooo sorry about your ear! I’m sure it is so frustrating to not get the doctor to understand you and then to finally get somewhere with one… yeah. I hope she works out, she sure sounds awesome! And getting the stuff out has to tell you something was wrong!!!! Duh!! Hang in there and I hope you feel better real quick!!

On that Ignite book, I read a while ago when it came out and I totally agree with the heroine needing a backbone!!! But I liked it for some reason *shrugs*. Who knows…

    • Thanks! I am hopeful that eventually I will get some answers and solutions. Sometimes I am more resigned to being deaf. Other times, its terrifying and it makes me super sad! This is one of the times where I am freaking out.

  6. I voted: It doesn’t really matter. I think that it’s actually equal. Granted I review more ARCs anyway, but on older books it seemed the same.

Sorry about your ear troubles. Your new doctor sounds great. Not many would inopportune themselves when they’re on vacation.

Hope you have a great week.

  7. I’m relatively new to blogging (and even newer to ARCs) and I was wondering the same thing as you when it came to reviews! On the one hand, I know that ARCs reviews can be annoying for me to read because I have to wait sometimes months before reading a book that sounds really cool. On other other hand, everyone seems to be posting reviews for new books, which makes me wonder if anyone wants to read my reviews on not-so-new books?

  8. Oh my god! Your monthly wrap-up reminded me that I COMPLETELY forgot to do my monthly wrap up for AUgust! Oh well.

That is also the reason why I usually don’t review classics. Those books don’t exactly need ‘reviews’ anymore. But sometimes you can still review books that have been out forever (like I do) because it’s not about the actual review, but your personal opinion on it.

  9. Like your book haul. I hope you enjoy them. You sure did read a lot in August. I had a busy month on the blog, not sure how it happened, but it did. I like how you share with us your Best, Least, and Most Anticipated Books. Thank you.

I hope your hearing gets better. I’ve not had issues yet on that front. Hopeful it’s a long ways away. Take care and have a fabulous week.

  10. That new doctor sounds like a keeper! I don’t know of any that would come in on the weekend or when they are off on holiday. And it sounds like she’s really getting that you are in pain and working to help you. That’s a ton of books you read this month. And the book box is lovely. They are such fun, aren’;t they:) I find that it doesn’t really matter whether my reviews are for older books or new releases and ARCs. In fact, many people have found the older books I review interesting as they had not heard of the author before. Probably because I read so many genres. LOL

  11. Rebel!! I’ll check it out. Anyway, I don’t always read new releases but the ones that catch my attention or highly recommended by fellow bloggers. I did try to read lots of ARCs and but didn’t liked almost all of them. I see readers love great rated books. I got lots of traffics for old books I reviewed simply because they’ve never heard of them before.
Anyway, Sorry to hear about your ear. I hope it’s getting better, hon. #hugs

Have a wonderful week and happy reading. ❤️

  12. I hope your new doctor’s plan work out for you and that your pain subsides. I find it odd, but my reviews are some of my least interacted with posts. I don’t think it’s fair to look at views, because if I have an email subscriber, they get the entire post in the email, so maybe they don’t need to visit unless they want to comment.

  13. This new Doc sounds like a winner. {{{posivibes}}} that she’ll continue to go that extra mile for you.

As for reviews for older books…I don’t really pay attention to blog hits about older books. Or any books really. I blog for fun, not numbers. I just post reviews whether the book is new, recently new or even really old. I think most people will read reviews no matter what. Sometimes, I get likes on reviews I wrote years ago and I find that interesting. There are always going to be people discovering a new-to-them older series, so I say go ahead and write those reviews. Besides, I have a ton of those I need to read and review myself. And I will. 🙂

  14. I’m amazed at the doctor who came in on a Saturday *and* said you should call her (on vacation) if you needed. Wow. That’s truly a dedicated and caring physician. Wish there were more like her around! It’s so frustrating when you feel like you aren’t being heard or when your concerns aren’t being taken seriously.
The news out of Houston is heartbreaking. I’m in FL and right now we’re seriously eyeing Hurricane Irma. It was upgraded to a Cat 5 this morning. Still too early to know which direction it will take but we’re getting nervous.

  15. Sorry to hear about your increased hearing loss! Hopefully the drops will help. I’m very impressed with your doctor as well! So hopefully she’ll find more ways to help. I have recurrent ear infections so I was thinking about visiting an ENT as well. What happened in Texas is indeed heartbreaking and now the two other hurricanes approaching the east coast! 🙁 🙁
