ARCs thanks to the authors and publishers:

So this week has been eye opening! First, I learned that there are people in my life who are not who I thought. YIKES. But, that didn’t deter me from posting things I hope will be helpful in getting them to rethink their action. I have spent my career teaching in very diverse schools. I worry about my Black students because they could be the future George, Brionna, or Trayvon. But, I can do better! I’m really diving in to research to understand how I can be a better ally. I had read How to be AntiRacist by Ibram X but I am going to start on a few books geared at helping teens be antiracist so I can spread the message to my students.

My new hearing aids came in Friday! They are really cool-they pair with my phone, there is an app that will translate foreign language you hear, they are rechargeable, and the list goes on. My audiologist was so excited because they are just so cool. But, they are pretty visible. I thought I was prepared and over it. Turns out, I’m not. I’m trying to get there though.

So, whats new with you this week? Did you read any of the same books I did? Did you find any great book deals I need to grab ASAP? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Yes I have found many people are not what I thought over the divisive politics over the last couple years and this is more of the same. I have all kinds of friends.

You have the whole summer to get used to the new hearing aids so that is great. I hope you have a fun summer. Happy reading, stay safe and be well.

  2. Sorry that you have found people in your life who aren’t who you thought they were… that is always a jarring feeling. I applaud your efforts to bring this issue to your students. And I hope that you manage to get to grips with your hearing aids. Have a better week, Samantha.

  3. What? Friends are shunning you because you dare say racisme is wrong??? Wow! Anyway good for you to still talk about it because yes that’s important! And your hearing aids are so cool even if you can spot them, having them translate is amazing!

  4. Same here- I’ve been shocked to see some of the views people I THOUGHT I knew held. I guess in times like this the truth comes out, huh?

Good luck with the new hearing aids! I hope they work out well for you. Be well this week!

  5. It is interesting to get surprise reactions on the events from people you think you know. Everyone has their own opinion, though. I can handle that if they don’t push their opinion or judge me for mine. Congrats on the new improved hearing aids! I hope you love them.

Nalini Singh is nailing the new Phy-Changleing books, right?

  6. Those hearing aids sound so NEAT!!! Its crazy how technology has grown right? Hope you adjust to them quickly. And Happy to see Alpha Night on your list there, I ADORED that book so much. I just love seeing a pair fight for each other so equally. We need to see more of that.

Of course Racism is wrong, its pure evil. But I think as a society we do improve and be better. We should all just love and accept each other and see the individual over race or gender or sexual orientation because at the end of the day we are just human beings trying to live life.

Hope you have a great week.

  7. So after my mother showed herself to be racist, despite having half-black children very little surprises me from people. But moments like this are very revealing. I’ve seen some nastiness that makes me just sad on social media. Thank you for standing up!

The hearing aids sound pretty cool – have you tested out the translator? I think I would have run to a Mexican grocery store or something right away lol! Sorry they are more visible than you’d like, but I bet its your perspective and most people won’t notice. I hope you get adjusted to them before too long.

Have a great week and stay safe!

  8. I’m also very disappointed with a few of the people in my life. They say, “Racism isn’t a problem” and then proceed to say a bunch of racist stuff. The hearing aids sound awesome! Hopefully you’re able to get used to them. I hope you have a good week!

  9. Those hearing aids sound magical! Hope you can get more comfortable with them soon. Thank you for working with teens, and being an ally 🙂 I work in the school kitchen and can also think of exactly which kids I worry most about. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your week.
