Too steamy for the penalty box…

The New Orleans Cajun Rage professional hockey team just won the Cup. No one thought they’d do it: they were a team of shoulda beens, never coulda beens and a star or two. They’d only been in the Crescent City for three years before this year’s Cinderella run that had them skating off the ice with the championship. Over the following summer, each player gets to keep the Cup for a day. Nobody knows why, but whoever has the Cup falls in love.

CAGED, USA Today Bestseller Virginia Nelson -The Ragin’ Cajuns right winger, Oliver Tremblay, learned that nothing good can stay when he lost his parents on 9/11. Maisie plans to melt the ice king’s heart and prove she’s just the girl to go skate to skate with him, whether he likes it or not.

But as soon as they meet, temperatures rise and their defenses fall.

BLADE, Avery Flynn – Bad girl Gillie Pike has gone straight, but someone with a lot of money wants to bring her out of retirement to steal the Cup and make sure it’s found in star goalie Flynn Kazakov’s possession. What should have been the biggest night of his career turns into the worst moment in his life when his wife Jules serves him with divorce papers. PENALTY BOX BLUES, Robin Kaye – Stryker Gyllenhaal, enforcer on the Ragin’ Cajun’s, knows that once he hits Boise, his time spent in the penalty box is nothing compared to the payback Karma Kincaid has in store for him. When he finds out she has hired a handler, Trish Reynolds, his old college tutor, he’s not sure who the real enforcer is. Karma, because she owns him for an entire week, or Trish, the only woman who knows his secret, and can slam his heart against the boards with a sideways glance. He is so pucked.

BEAR NAKED, Katie Kenyhercz – First Nations defenseman Bear Thompson wants to spend his day with the Cup back home on the reserve, but first he has to convince his childhood sweetheart and current band chief Aria Paul to give him another chance and that letting the media in won’t be the end of the world. The win shines spotlight on the whole team and he needs to clean up his act…but what the hell does he know about being a knight in shining armor?

IN SKATES TROUBLE, Kate Meader – Right winger Ford “Killer” Callaghan can’t believe he let the anonymous woman who blew his mind slip away into the night. He’ll track her down because once could never be enough–even if discovering Addison Williams’s identity places her strictly out of bounds. Stolen kisses. Secret hook-ups. Deliciously forbidden in every way. Can a passion that started in the dark find a lifetime of love in the light?

MAKING HIS MOVE, Susan Scott Shelley – Backup goaltender Rod Fraser is a free agent in every sense. He’s ready for a new team, and hoping for another shot with his best friend’s sister. But Arielle Charton thinks Rod’s interest is fleeting, and she doesn’t need the distraction. She’s on a mission to rebuild her life. Rod’s made his living making impossible saves, but it will take the impossible to convince the shy artist that she’s captured his heart.

CHECKING YES, Misty D. Waters – Family secrets drove star left-winger Cooper Banks away from the love of his life, but hot off a championship win he’s no longer satisfied with second place. Except the daddy’s girl he left behind is now a woman no longer impressed by his charming smile. So when Savannah Jane Scott decides to put Cooper in the penalty box, she aims to keep him there…for good this time.

From Checking Yes by Misty D. Waters:

Cooper pushed through the front doors on damn near a sprint, only to come to a halt at the sight of rain. Not just any rain. A downpour. It crashed down in the street past the overhang, turning the day’s end a dark gray.

Savannah stood at the very edge to the far right, blinking out at the unstoppable weather. Nose pinched with indecision. Already her hair had taken on a mildly frizzy edge even though not a single drop had touched her.

He approached her with caution. He knew she was aware of his presence the second her shoulders tensed.

She sighed. “You don’t happen to have my purse, do you?”

“No,” he said. “I’ll go get it for you if you want.”

But he didn’t want. He knew she’d leave the second he went back inside. Nothing, not even her purse, was worth staying for at a time like this.

“That’s okay. Daddy’ll get it.” She glanced skyward. “I just wish this rain would stop.”

“Where are you parked?”

Savannah finally glanced over, and he saw the tears in her eyes. “Doesn’t matter. Keys are in my purse.”

He saw it all then. How trapped she felt. By the rain, the absence of keys to her only means of escape, by Cooper himself. Maybe even by her own family. This town.

“I’m so damn sorry, Savannah Jane.”

A tiny fire ignited in her eyes. “I don’t think you know what you have to be sorry about.”

She turned and strode down the sidewalk. Right into the rain. Her pink silk blouse became a second skin and revealed the shape of her bra. Cooper thought he could see the tiny shape of flowers dotting white.

Cooper followed her into the downpour and threw his suit jacket over her shoulders. Wouldn’t shield her from the rain, but it would protect her modesty.

“It’s not that I don’t know what I’m sorry for,” he said. “It’s just that I don’t know where or how to begin. You want me to start with tonight? Fine. I’m sorry your dad is going to turn this around and somehow make it your fault. I’m sorry I embarrassed you when I let everyone know that I still love you. But it’s true. I never stopped.”

Savannah slowed to a standstill and looked up. Water dripped off her tiny nose, and coated her long black lashes. “You have to stop, Cooper.”

She may as well have asked him to stick a sword through his heart. “I won’t do that.”

She laughed without mirth. Stuck her hands on her hips. “There was a time when I might have heard that and thought for just a second that I didn’t want you to. But tonight I’m reminded how hard it was to be with you. Constant battles with Momma and Daddy. Over you. It’s always over you. And it doesn’t matter how I feel. I can’t live like this.”

He heard every word she said, but some stood out more than others. “You still love me, don’t you?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Except she did. The truth was there in the way she couldn’t look at him and how her arms dropped from her hips only to return seconds later. She was blushing and fidgety and a little girl again, too afraid to admit the truth over a crush.

“Tell me.” He inched closer. “I know I don’t deserve it, but I have to know.”

Savannah retreated toward the side of the hotel, shaking her head. “Quit it.”

Cooper finally had her back to the wall. He set his hands to the surface on either side of her head. Despite how the rain plastered her hair, and wiped almost all traces of makeup from her face, he still found her to be the most beautiful woman he’d ever known. All he could think about was kissing her. Reminding her how good they were together. Not just good. Strong. Impenetrable.

He leaned toward her upturned mouth. Her eyes began to close. So did his.

“Check yes or no,” he whispered, lips curling into a smile.

Just as he was about to set his mouth to hers, she dropped abruptly about five inches.

Savannah bent sideways to retrieve the high heels she’d stepped out of. “No. Goodbye, Cooper.”

Stunned and blinking rapidly, Cooper watched the woman he loved walk away. The finality in her tone rang in his ears and he finally understood. They weren’t good, strong, and impenetrable together. At some point in the last three years, she’d become that all on her own.

And he was nothing without her.
