Ok, so let me just say that I think Kaitlyn is one of my favorite book characters EVER! Here is why:
1. She is genuinely a good person! She wants to do the right thing simply because its the right thing. And when it comes from her, its believable! Penny Reid has managed to make this incredibly good girl believable and that is just short of a miracle!
2. She is true to herself. Kaitlyn doesn’t pretend; she wears what she wants, she admits to hiding because she wants to, she owns up to her issues. She is honest with Martin about her feelings and their relationship. Sometimes it makes you cringe for her but its so honest and REAL you just love her!
3. She isn’t a slut! So often in new adult books, even if the girl starts off the book as a virgin, something bad happens and before you know it, she is screwing every frat guy she can find. But, Kaitlyn, being herself, does what you would expect of a girl like her. She hides in closets, she questions her life decisions, and she is sad for a long time. Its so realistic you can honestly feel her pain.
So, Kaitlyn pretty much made this book for me. Martin was a good character for her; he wasn’t a likable guy but he wanted to be for her. I am not usually a fan of one person in the relationship changing for the other but in this case, because Kaitlyn is such an honestly good person, it works when Martin begins to make some changes.
Sam is a great supporting character. She is different from Kaitlyn in so many ways and I think she provided a great sounding board. Sam never judged Kaitlyn and didn’t mock her when she asked honest questions that most college girls would know. Everyone needs a Sam!
I love this book so much, I went out and one-clicked everything Penny Reid has written. I’m not kidding. I am so obsessed now! So, expect more Penny Reid reviews in the future!
