One step forward. Two steps back. The Tufts scholarship that put Nora Stuart on the path to becoming a Boston medical specialist was a step forward. Being hit by a car and then overhearing her boyfriend hit on another doctor when she thought she was dying? Two major steps back.

Injured in more ways than one, Nora feels her carefully built life cracking at the edges. There's only one place to land: home. But the tiny Maine community she left fifteen years ago doesn't necessarily want her. At every turn, someone holds the prodigal daughter of Scupper Island responsible for small-town drama and big-time disappointments.

With a tough islander mother who's always been distant and a wild-child sister in jail, unable to raise her daughter--a withdrawn teen as eager to ditch the island as Nora once was--Nora has her work cut out for her if she's going to take what might be her last chance to mend the family.

But as some relationships crumble around her, others unexpectedly strengthen. Balancing loss and opportunity, a dark event from her past with hope for the future, Nora will discover that tackling old pain makes room for promise...and the chance to begin again.

Here are just a few of the reasons I adored Now that you Mention It:

  •  Nora is such an amazing heroine! First, she is whip smart, which is awesome. Second, she has the best outlook on things. She manages to put a light spin on things that most people wouldn’t (being a gastroenterologist for example!). Things don’t go her way and she has some fears and doubt, but she puts on her big girl panties and deals with it!
  • Small town living! I never thought I would enjoy stories about small towns or going back to the small town you grew up in, because I lived in one of those types of towns. However, Nora makes me wish I was brave enough to do what she did! She packed up her life in Boston and faced her teenage bullies. This small town vibe flows well into the family drama of the story. Nora also has to face her emotionally distant mom, her absent father, her bitchy sister, and a niece she doesn’t really know at all. All these characters are dynamic and engaging and help make Nora’s story real and emotional!
  • There are some hilarious moments! Seriously, there are parts of this book that had me wiping tears from my face due to laughing so hard.

Bottom line, if you want a heroine you can relate to and root for, some levity to make the story a joyful journey, and real emotions that show character depth and growth in real life issues, Now that You Mention It is the perfect pick!

  1. I am so conflicted about this one. I’ve tried some of Higgins’ books and I haven’t really been a fan of her writing. But you make this one sound so good. I love the sound of that heroine. I’ll check if the library has this available and give it a try.
