A new novel from the author of Bound to Danger who “has the amazing ability of pulling the reader onto the front lines of the action and drama.” (The Reading Café)
When his wife was murdered two years ago, Special Agent Levi Lazaro turned his back on everything he cared about. Ever since, he has thought of nothing but vengeance. Now he's finally uncovered the identities of those who killed his wife—and he's ready to destroy them at any cost. He won’t let anything stand in his way—not even a beautiful NSA agent on a mission of her own.
Special Agent Selene Wolfe prides herself on being the best. Her fearlessness and quick-thinking make her the perfect person to take down a deadly terrorist cell. But she needs Levi’s help, and the moment he shows up, Selene knows her objectivity—and her heart—are in trouble.
As the two strike an uneasy alliance, Levi finds himself tormented by his desire for Selene—a feeling he thought long dead. But when their mission takes an unexpected turn, he finds himself faced with an impossible choice: either put aside his need for revenge, or save the woman who’s reawakened his soul…
Katie Reus has become one of my favorite authors. Shattered Duty is part of her Deadly Ops series. I started with this one (book 3) and it wasn’t an issue at all. I started with this one because the library didn’t have book 1 or 2 available yet. Thankfully for me, it totally worked.
Shattered Duty is the story of Selene, an NSA agent, and Levi, an ex-NSA agent, and their attempt to bring down a Russian terrorist. Levi left the NSA when his wife was tortured and killed by a terrorist and has been ‘off the reservation’ for 2 years. Selene is sent on an op to meet with the Russian terrorist accused of killing Levi’s wife. Of course, Levi is looking for him as well and their paths cross and they end up making a shaky alliance.
Selene is such an interesting character. She had a rough event in her youth and was recruited into black ops at a very young age. She has an eidetic memory, a great knowledge of weapons, can make a sniper shot look like a walk in the park, and can hack just about anything techie. She is smart, dangerous, and dedicated. I love when female characters are written dynamically. She is not just a bad ass robot. She is still a woman with insecurities, despite her confidence in so many areas.
Levi is the quintessential tortured hero. He loved his wife and she was carrying their child when she was tortured and killed. After her death, he loses it (understandably!) and spends years hunting the man responsible. He struggles with the survivors guilt and his guilt about being attracted to someone other than his late wife. Since they are both spies, trust is a huge issue. The action keeps the story moving at a quick pace. This is a great romantic suspense story!
So far, all of Reus’ audiobooks have Sophie Eastlake narrating. Eastlake is great! The voices aren’t overdone and her narration doesn’t detract from the story. Her enunciation is great and, again, not distracting. I am kind of picky about stuff like that.

book by Kaylea Cross, Susan Stoker, or Kill without Mercy by Alexandra Ivy…then you will probably like Shattered Duty!
I’m behind in this series, and I really need to remedy that, because I love Katie Reus! And it’s good to know that her books work well in audio as well.
Great review, Samantha 🙂
Ooh, this sounds good. You’re reading a lot of good ones, lately huh? That’s awesome! I’m adding this to my wish list!
I am in LOVE with Katie Reus. Her books are usually fairly quick reads, but are always enjoyable!
