The cries of the dead are deafening
Women are being taken in Virginia, and FBI agent Mark Frampton is determined to put a stop to it. Certain he’s closing in on the killer known as The Embracer, Mark is less than thrilled when he’s partnered with rookie agent Colleen Law, worried she’s a liability when there’s so much at stake.
But like everyone in the Krewe of Hunters, Colleen has talents that extend beyond the usual investigative toolbox. She can hear the voices of the victims in her head, and they’re telling her she and Mark are near to uncovering the truth.
When Mark’s prime suspect takes a liking to Colleen, he’s surprisingly protective of his new partner, even as he admits her connection to the victims is key. But tense interrogations turn dangerously personal when someone close to Colleen goes missing, luring the agents deep into the shadows of wooded rural Virginia, where nobody can hear them scream.

Sound of Darkness and Aura of Night are kind of a “duet” within this series (Krewe of Hunters) because they focus on a pair of sisters, Colleen and Megan.

Sound of Darkness focuses on Colleen, who can hear the victims of a serial killer in her head. While Colleen and FBI Agent Mark are getting close to the killer, Colleen’s sister Megan gets kidnapped. And even when they think they have things figured out, it turns out the “Embracer” isn’t what or who they thought. Colleen and Mark fall in love and when they think they have closed the case and everyone is safe, they take off for a honeymoon. The book was interesting because this isn’t any typical killer. Colleen’s talent is essential to figuring out what is going on, and while Mark didn’t want to be saddled with a new agent initially, he catches feelings for Colleen pretty quick.

Alas, as we quickly discover in Aura of Night, the killer might be more cunning and is now coming for Megan. Ragnar, Mark’s partner, swoops in right away to keep Megan safe. Megan, like Colleen has a unique talent as well that helps her and Ragnar save victims and hone in on the killer. Because Megan and Ragnar already know each other from Sound of Darkness, their romance is a little different. Megan has a crush on Ragnar, and these two kind of dance around each other as the tension builds. I think I liked this couple more than Colleen and Mark!

    • Oh interesting!! I have the first 10 or so on audio and have been slowly making my way through them. Good to know I need to prepare myself for a narrator change!
