Happy birthday to my Dad! He is one of the people who instilled the love of reading in me. He was a big Tolkien fan so I read the Hobbit in like elementary school.
The theme of this week was “broke”. Y’all, we have no money. I don’t know if its just inflation taking over what little extra we had, but my bank account was single digits all week. And then on Friday something auto renewed without notice (and also the yearly price DOUBLED) and my account was woefully overdrawn (edited to add: we now have that taken care of, thankfully). I have nothing left in savings either. We have always lived close to paycheck to paycheck, but now, that isn’t enough and we are drowning. I am going to have to start cutting out everything. Our cell phone bill is up, our energy bill this month was the biggest it has ever been, and even bags of dog food have gone up to $50 for a 16 lb bag!
So, being broke means it was a VERY low key week here. We had hamburgers for dinner every night because that was pretty much all that was left in the fridge. One day we had a frozen pizza. I didn’t go anywhere (to avoid using gas) and I didn’t shop on Prime Day. I did do a LOT of homework. My summer classes are harder than any quarter previously.
I can’t believe I go back to work in 2 weeks. I’m excited because it will be a new role (school psychologist) and I won’t have to be in the classroom. I’m nervous because education is a disaster right now-we still have open positions in our buildings and no applicants. It will be TOUGH.
I got some pool time in this week. Ranger loves to explore the backyard while I am in the pool. It usually results in him having to have a bath afterward, but he is happy as a clam! Calleigh just suns herself on the deck, which makes her happy too, so everyone wins!
So, whats new with you this week? Did you read any of the same books I did? Did you find any great book deals I need to grab ASAP? Let me know in the comments!
I hear you. It feels like everything is more expensive. I was shocked by what we spent on groceries last month. I did shop on Prime Day for some items but need to hold the spending now for awhile as my income is fixed for now. It’s exciting for you to reach your goals but 2 weeks – UGH. That seems fast. I guess you start at the beginning of August. We started mid-August in Iowa. My daughter’s college starts mid-August too. Enjoy your summer!

I am always super cheap and spend little, but I have noticed prices for my food items rising. Can you do pension loans for the summer? I did it once when I was teaching, but I had co-workers who did it every summer. Good luck with your classes, and HOW EXCITING that you are starting your new position. I know all will go well.
Yes! Everything is so expensive right now! Groceries are insane. My husband and I think it might actually be cheaper to eat out sometimes. I hope you’re able to get ahead with money. Hopefully some prices will come down, like gas. I can’t believe you go back in two weeks. When I was a kid we didn’t start back to school until after Labor Day. My kids started back early too and I always thought it was way too hot to be going back to school. Congrats on your new position, though!
That baseball video was too funny. Love that. 🙂 The impact of inflation is staggering. Everyone talks about gas and groceries, but it really is everything. I’m jealous of your pool time. I haven’t had any of that since our trip to Orlando back in May. I could use a good pool day about now!
Happy Birthday to your pappa….that is just great as both our dads got us reading and I adore TOLKIEN!! I hear ya about the pricing, its ridiculous. And its not like most of the jobs are increasing the wages at all. Man, I never knew how good things were two years ago haha it’s one of the main reasons I am working from home and really minimizing what I spend. As everything is going up, my rent alone will be going up to $120 next year. I hope you find ways to get things back financially. Looks like you were able to grab up some great books there.
Oh, no. Good luck with everything. I hope things pick up for you soon. And I hope your new position is everything you want it to be.
