Non-Bookish News:

I made it through my week of doctors appointments. Thankfully, the dentist was easy-no issues! Nothing stresses me out quite like the dentist.

The husband and I are really struggling with money. It just seems like we have more bills than we have income. Then I get stressed because we have no money. Its a vicious cycle. You don’t think that after you go to college, get an advanced degree, and have a professional job that you would live paycheck to paycheck. We don’t have a huge house or fancy cars either. There are times I look around and think-Seriously? What happened to our money? We have maxed out credit cards trying to stay afloat. Now, there is nothing left on any of our credit cards and still not enough money to pay the bills, gas, groceries, etc. And even worse, right now my student loans are in forbearance so thats another $400 a month I will have to pay starting in October! There has to be a better way to live, right. There has to be a way to manage everything! Every time I read something about making sure you have 6 months worth of income in a savings account I just laugh. I don’t have enough money to get through the month, I certainly don’t have ANY savings.

Now that my doctors appointments are completed I can kind of relax until I have to go back to work. I do have to take the dogs to the vet this week, but that isn’t too bad. Well, Yoda is kind of a jerk at the vet, but whatever. We will all get through it. And that will cost me $200 (shots). Sigh.

Did you get anything on Prime Day? Obviously, I didn’t because I have no money, but I couldn’t even get the website to load half the time! It seemed like lots of people were having problems. Once I did get it to work I didn’t see anything that was really exciting either.

So, whats new with you this week? Did you read any of the same books I did? Did you find any great book deals I need to grab ASAP? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I left teaching for many reasons, but a big one is I no longer buy into the go-to-college-get-a-great-life thing. I have a BS in chemical engineering, which got me ZERO jobs, and an EdM in physical science eduction. After teaching for 12 years, I apparently had NO transferrable job skills. I wish I had some good vocational training, which would have given me some practical skills, and there are lots of jobs if you have skills like that too. You know what they say about hindsight. I have just learned to be super-cheap and not spend any money.

  2. I’m sorry to hear about your troubles We can relate at our house. We are both prior law enforcement and made decent money in Florida but here in Tennessee where live, law enforcement doesn’t make a whole of money. Anne finding another job, you go.to.the interviews and they ask, “why don’t you go back in law and you have the training?” It gets really frustrating. I hope. everything works out for you and your family.

  3. Sorry to hear about your troubles. I hope everything works out. You got some nice ARC’s I hope you enjoy them. As for Prime Day… Well I tried to get on and check it out, but the dogs kept coming up for me and when I did get it to work their wasn’t anything worth getting. It was a disappointment this time around! I did pick up a few eBooks. They had a special buy one get the next at 20% or 30% off something like that. Not much, but I had a gift card and so I did that.
Have a great week and Happy Reading!!

  4. Oh my gosh that video is the best thing I’ve seen all weekend lol. Hilarious. Can’t Touch This and Welcome to the Jungle KILLED me.

    I hate the dentist.

I’m sorry to hear about the money thing. You’re not alone, for what that’s worth. I know a lot of people struggling, and I often wonder the same thing- if you do everythnig right, go to school and get a good job- what’s the deal??

Anyway hope you have a good week!

  5. I’m glad the dentist appointment went well. I understand about the money situation. I have 3 college degrees and no money. I don’t have any outrageous spending habits, either. I barely make enough to keep myself alive.

  6. The world is full of money woes. We all have them. I could barely get the site to work for Prime Day and I collected mostly freebies and spent the $10 I earned by a purchase at Whole Foods on a few kitchen things. I spent audible credits I already had to get another $10 credit there. I get many Amazon things for gluten-free which I can’t get locally. Sometimes when I can get them local it is at Whole Foods. Expensive but cheaper than medical bills and illness for my daughter. I try to stick to ARCs and the library as much as I can. I have gone a bit off the deep end on audiobooks. I hope each week is better for you! Anne – Books of My Heart

  7. (((hugs))) I know all about the money struggles and it really sucks so I’ll send all of my good thoughts your way and hope that things work themselves out for you and your hubby.

I never get anything on Prime Day, I’m very careful with my spending money so I try to stay away from buying things unless I absolutely have to.

I hope you have a great week in books and life, Samantha!

  8. You aren’t alone with money probs! While husband and I don’t have student loans, we have to pay for our mortgage and that’s another thing altogether!

I also didn’t buy anything during Prime Day. Sigh* I didn’t see anything worth buying anyway!

Hope your doctor’s appointments went okay!

  9. I’m with you on the dentist. I’m sorry to hear your financial struggles. Do yall coupon? I’ve gotten into it this past year and it’s insane how much money you can save on groceries/essentials. I save about 80% now and that money saved is a godsend. If you don’t coupon and want some help getting started let me know. I have a FB group I’m sharing tips in and good coupons. You also might contact companies you use each month and ask about discounts. I did that with my cell phone and by pre-paying it (and getting the exact same data, etc but just paying at the start of the month instead of the end of the month) I save $40 a month. I couldn’t believe that change in price. Well worth it for me.

  10. I’m with you on money! At the moment, things suck for us because every penny we have is being plowed into buying a house and to prepare for those couple of months where we’ll have BOTH rent and mortgage (and some doubles of bills) to pay. I constantly feel sick when I think about it all. I know it’ll be worth it in the end but it doesn’t change the hard NOW.
Like you said, it’s frustrating when you both have degrees, both work in professional jobs and are still struggling to LIVE let alone save. Outwith the house buying, we usually do ok on the living but it took us over 10 years to get on the property ladder with the absolute minimum deposit we could get away with and the house we’re buying isn’t close to what we ideally need. It’s a ‘good enough for now’ but still… Small victories, right?
I tell myself, things will work out in the end. 🙂

I hope things pick up for you soon and a silver lining appears!
