Nicholas Arthur Frederick Edward Pembrook, Crowned Prince of Wessco, aka His Royal Hotness, is wickedly charming, devastatingly handsome, and unabashedly arrogant; hard not to be when people are constantly bowing down to you. Then, one snowy night in Manhattan, the prince meets a dark haired beauty who doesn't bow down. Instead, she throws a pie in his face. Nicholas wants to find out if she tastes as good as her pie, and this heir apparent is used to getting what he wants. Dating a prince isn't what waitress Olivia Hammond ever imagined it would be. There's a disapproving queen, a wildly inappropriate spare heir, relentless paparazzi, and brutal public scrutiny. While they've traded in horse drawn carriages for Rolls Royces, and haven't chopped anyone's head off lately, the royals are far from accepting of this commoner. But to Olivia, Nicholas is worth it. Nicholas grew up with the whole world watching, and now Marriage Watch is in full force. In the end, Nicholas has to decide who he is and, more importantly, who he wants to be: a King... or the man who gets to love Olivia forever.

I discovered Emma Chase near the beginning of 2016 and she became an immediate favorite of mine. Her typical books are all male POV and she does an amazing job. Royally screwed is the first book of hers I have read that is dual POV! Chase’s books are always the right balance of smart, funny, and heartwarming. Her characters are dynamic and the plot is engaging. I always know I will finish an Emma Chase book with a smile on my face, and Royally Screwed was no exception!

Nicholas is not always a pompous ass. Don’t get me wrong, there are times when he totally is an ass. But, there were scenes that made me cry because he was so thoughtful View Spoiler ». I liked Olivia as well. She really is the quintessential down on your luck girl. Stuck in her home town, barely surviving, and on the brink of losing everything. She is carrying the burden of her family’s financial problems alone and with bill collectors all but attacking her for money, she is nearly sunk. I was also pleased to see that while she could have easily taken money from Nicholas, she wouldn’t. That would have caused an odd power shift between the two. Olivia is kind of your ‘every girl’. You know, she is just so normal. She has family shame, she is super broke, she is stuck in a life that she doesn’t love, and she dreams of more. Its impossible to not love her almost instantly.

I also fell in love with Prince Henry, Nicolas’ brother. I can’t wait for his story! He tries to be the party prince, but its all to mask this terrible pain. Even though he wasn’t the center of this book, you get to know him rather well.

While you can see the obvious conflict of the story coming, Chase did a great job of creating the tension and still throwing in a curve ball. Royally Screwed seems predictable on its face, but what Chase does with her writing is make you still care so much, you can’t stop reading. I loved the allusions scattered throughout the book! They made me smile! I also loved the cameo by my FAVORITE Emma Chase characters, Mason and Kennedy! And I am pretty sure in the beginning there is an allusion to Genovia…isn’t that from the Princess Diaries? Love it!

About Emma Chase

By day, Emma Chase is a devoted wife and mother who resides in a small town in New Jersey. By night she is a keyboard crusader, toiling away the hours to bring her colorful characters and their endless antics to life. She has a long standing love/hate relationship with caffeine.

Emma is an avid reader. Before her children were born she was known to consume whole books in a single day. Writing has also always been a passion and with the 2013 release of her debut romantic comedy, Tangled, the ability to now call herself an author is nothing less than a dream come true.

  1. I’m really glad to see you enjoyed this! I’ll be reading it as soon as it shows up on my e-reader! It sounds like more emotional than her other books, but I have no doubt she’ll deal with it well.
    Great review!

Great review Samantha! Doesn’t Chase write from the male POV wonderfully? I think she hits the male thought processes right on the nail every time. I can’t wait for this book and after reading your review, I’m even more anxious!
