This Week’s Book Haul:

Non-Bookish News:

Work has been exhausting. Trying to schedule IEP meetings, administering the ACT, etc, has really taken its toll on me. I enjoy my job, but this time of the year I seriously wonder if I can do this. Because of my anxiety disorder I tend to get worked up over things that, in the grand scheme of things, aren’t a big deal.  Its frustrating because I don’t want to get this upset over everything, but I can’t stop it. It becomes a biological process that I can’t stop. My heartrate gets high, my stomach is upset, my head begins to ache, my hands get all shaky. Its just a pain.

I know I have mentioned the boys basketball team at the HS I teach at and the terrible schedule of the games. Well, they made the state semi-finals and Finals! The semi-finals game? 2 pm on Friday in Columbus (2 hours away). Do they not understand these are high school kids?! In a fortutious twist, we actually were already scheduled off on Friday anyway, but if we hadn’t been, it would have been another day off for a basketball game. Crazy, right?! I can’t imagine what it would be like in a public school that can’t just cancel school on a whim for a basketball game (and having said that, I noticed that almost ALL the teams in the final 4 for all divisions are private schools…) And all this while state testing, ACT, and all the other spring stuff that keeps teachers and students busy are happening! Regardless, it is a great to see the boys finding success. I’m very proud of them and their coach is one of the best math teachers I have ever met. He has a way of teaching math that is perfect for so many students. I don’t know if that is what makes him a great coach or if being such a great coach makes him a great teacher, but either way, we are very lucky to have him. They played in the finals game on Saturday and they lost by 2 points. So close!

My computer display broke again. This is the 2nd time in 4 months. I got the computer in December, and maybe 2 weeks later the display got wonky. They had to ship it to China, and then 2 weeks later they said “Yeah, we can’t fix it, here is a new one”. Then Thursday at school, all the sudden the screen goes wonky again. We take it into the store and they tell us they have to ship it off again. I have never had issues like this with a Mac. Ever. So, we asked the guy if it would be possible to get a different computer. I had the newest MacBook pro with the touch bar. I decided to go back to a MacBook Air. The Air is several hundred bucks cheaper so now I have some money left on a gift card too. But the best part? I am happy with my computer again! The pro was cool-the touch bar thing was really neat. But other than that, the computer was a bit of a dud. I mean, 2 different computers with display problems? I have had mac products for the last 15 years and never had a single issue. I don’t think they have worked the kinks out of their new line yet.

So, whats new with you this week? Did you read any of the same books I did? Did you find any great book deals I need to grab ASAP? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Sorry to hear that. I had an exhausting week as well, although it was a productive one. I’m not actually feeling well right now. I’m having a cold. 🙁
Anyway, Glad to hear about your boys. And Yes, Mac products are by far the best in my opinion. I haven’t had any issues so far. I love mac air. It is way lighter.
I hope you have a great week, Sam.

    • I started coughing last night and I am not thrilled about it. I don’t really have time to be sick!
I am glad to be back to my Air. I love it! This is the first time I have ever had issues with a mac product so it was unusual to say the least!

  2. Oh my gosh, that sounds so frustrating with your computer! I hope you get it fixed soon because that is so annoying. I know what you mean about work, sometimes it’s a good idea to take a step back and evaluate. Sometimes it’s just not worth the anxiety! Have a lovely week ahead!

    • I am really glad to have an Air again! I only switched to the new pro because the touch bar is cool. But the rest of the computer? not so much. So, I am thrilled to have an Air again!

  3. Your week sounds like it was very frustrating. I’m so sorry to hear about it. And the computer nonsense. Geez. That’s a lot of trouble for a newer model too. But I’m glad it all worked out. That’s awesome to hear about your basketball team!
I hope you have a better more relaxing week, Sam!

    • Thanks Nick!! I am hoping this week is easier! My computer is working, basketball is over, and spring break is in 3 weeks so fingers crossed!

  4. Wow, that’s awful about your computer! I’m glad you finally got one that works better though. Sorry about your anxiety with work. I can understand – anxiety is never fun, but hopefully you can get through it okay!!

    -Lauren

  5. I just finished Kiss Marry Kill this morning. It took me 6 days to get through it. I honestly, hated it. Argh! Which I’m still sad about it. Anyways, hope things start to slow down for you. And I hope you have a good week.

    • It isn’t my favorite from her. I skimmed through some parts and I was just saying to my husband how long it took me to finish compared to other books.

  6. I am glad you were able to finally get a computer that works for you. I hate computer problems. I have never had a MAC–always too expensive. I need to seriously look into a new computer myself, but we’re saving for my daughter’s and my trip back East this summer. Hoping my computer will hold up for awhile yet.

I hope you have a better week this week. I feel for you with all you have to do and the anxiety on top of it. Sending big hugs your way, Samantha.

  7. Glad the store worked with you. I am eying Mac’s this year. I have always had Windows laptops but wanting to try Mac. I will be leery of the newest version. Wahoo, so glad the basketball team made the finals. I hope the week ahead is an easier one.

    • I love Macs. I will never be able to go back to PC (I brought my work laptop home this weekend anticipating not have my mac and I wanted to kick it.) Avoid the ones with the touch bar. They obviously haven’t worked that model’s kinks out yet!

  8. That’s great about the basketball team, although I can definitely see your frustration with how the scheduling happens. that would be tough for the kids and the teachers I would think! Still glad they came so close. I bet they’re really proud. 🙂

And the computer problems- ugh! that would be frustrating too! You’d think in this day and age they could make products that last a little better lol!

Yay for the discussion post! I’ll go check it out…

    • The team is very proud. I mean, 2 points away from a state championship!? It sucks to lose, but the fact they made it this far makes them very proud. In 2002 we were the high school team that beat LeBron’s high school team (when it was Lebron’s senior year, right before he went to the NBA). So, the kids kind of always have that hanging over them. Sometimes its hard to live up to “the team that beat Lebron!”. But, they are great kids!

  9. The school stuff does sound stressful, and I’m sorry that your anxiety is making things even harder for you :-/ That’s awesome about the basketball team though!

The computer troubles must’ve been frustrating, but it sounds like it worked out for the best in the end! Glad you’ve finally ended up with a computer you’re happy with and have saved some money too!

    • Yes, thankfully it seems that all is well in computer land again! I forgot how much I loved my Air in the first place so I am glad to have one again!

    • Oh they are the best! I will never go back to PC. Even with the issues I have had with this newest model, Mac is still the best computer hands down! I hope you get one soon! I want to convert the whole world!

  10. We both got new computers. I’m enjoying learning mine. Used to always have Toshiba’s but went with Dell this time. I hope you have an easier week ahead. Hang in there:)

  11. Sorry to hear about your computer troubles. At least you have something you like and it’ solved now, plus some extra cash on a GC to enjoy. No books read. OMG!! I can’t go without reading. I will pick up a reread, if I’m not feeling like anything new.

Great that the boys did so well and are off to the finals, but ya high school at that age and this time of year they have a lot going on. I wish them luck.

Well have a great week and happy reading!

    • IEPs are so tough! As a teacher, I want to do whatever I can to help a child succeed, but there is so much red tape and rules, especially at the high school level because of graduation! And I really think all the students I work with have a tremendous amount of talent if they can find what it is they are passionate about. Finding it? Thats the hard part! Hope your son’s meeting goes well!

  12. I get nervous when I’m in front of people (like teaching a big group) and a guy who was in the military talked about breathing in for four, holding for four, and out for four to counteract the body’s response and repeating it until the shakes are gone. I’m planning on trying that more to see if it helps. Anxiety is no joke.

I think everyone hates this time of year with tests! I know our schools don’t like them either and there are a couple they have to do too. That’s crazy with the basketball game being during when school would normally be! I’m with you there.

We love Macs, but don’t have them. Such a bummer about those issues, but I’m so glad it’s all figured out now.

I hope this week goes well and thanks for stopping by!

    That is totally crazy about

  13. Rowena

My Mac that I have right now has been the longest lasting computer that I’ve ever had and I’m hoping that continues because I do not want to buy a new computer. Fingers crossed that your computer continues to work! That’s strange about the newer computer screens going all wonky on you like that.

Great job on your boys basketball team. That’s awesome that they got so far!

    • I have never had issues with a Mac before so I am sure that going back to the air will be just fine! I think they just might have some glitches to work out with the new line of pros!
