Spellcaster is an engaging fantasy story set in a magic college. Paisley was a great character-she is still trying to figure out who she is (literally-she can’t figure out her magic) when she finds out there is someone out there who wants her dead.
Paisley doesn’t remember Logan or the death that caused his father to blame her mother, but her family is absolutely terrified Logan is at Weatherstone to kill her. But, Logan is more silent stalker with a major grumpy attitude. The magical world is built as you read, so there isn’t that huge info dump at the beginning which can make fantasy feel overwhelming. Humans exist in this world, but this magical world is separate (kind of like Harry Potter). There is plenty of magical danger and monsters that keep Paisley guessing as to who is trying to kill her.
I loved that Paisley has a wonderful family. It so many fantasy reads, families are broken and/or dysfunctional at best and dangerous at worst. Paisley has 4 siblings and 2 parents and all of them are supportive and caring. Paisley is trying to figure out her power, but no one ever makes her feel like a failure. It was refreshing!
The audio is fabulous. I love duet narration. The story is only told from Paisley’s POV, but the male voices are narrated by the male, and the female voices narrated by the female.
