Oakley Spurlock is dying.

She only has weeks to live thanks to a freak infection that totally and completely destroyed her kidneys.

Despite her family’s desperation, not a single one of them is a match.

In a last-ditch attempt, Oakley’s father takes to social media to beg for help to save his daughter’s life.

Pace Vineyard is lost. So lost, in fact, that he’s not sure he wants to be found.

But then a beautiful woman’s face is splashed across social media, and Pace finds a spark in his soul for the first time since a bomb went off beside him.

He’s already missing two legs. What’s one more kidney?

At least, that’s what he tells himself.

What he doesn’t expect is to give his heart to the woman, too. Or for the woman to run away with it and force him to follow.

I wasn’t sure I wanted to read I’d Rather Not by Lani Lynn Vale. My dislike of sad plots is well known and this one sounded like a doozy! I mean, Oakley is DYING and Pace lost both his legs. This has SAD written all over it. But, its also LLV, so we know I’m gonna read it.

Oakley is Trance and Viddy’s daughter and she has been through hell. She got the flu and then had one bad break after another resulting in total failure of her kidneys. Pace lost both his legs in an explosion while in the armed forces; he served with Oakley’s brother Ford. His family is a nightmare! His mom and sister are scam artists and manipulators of the highest order. Pace had never met Oakley, but he fell in love when he saw pictures of her and Ford together. Years later he has a chance to meet her-and give her a kidney!

I loved the devotion between Oakley and Pace. The tension in the story doesn’t come from their relationship which I appreciate. You can see right away that the “villains” will be Pace’s mom and sister as well as his former boss. I did NOT see it all going down the way it did though. Holy crap! Vale can still surprise me with the direction she takes a story. I’d Rather Not starts out as a story of two people finding each other when they were in desperate need and ends with a beautiful love story. I loved getting more of Viddy and Trance as well!
